How Long Does an AC Unit Last in Florida?

Written and reviewed by Daniel ArgotaUpdated 2026-10-30

An AC unit in Florida usually lasts 10 to 15 years, according to Fort Myers contractor Gulf Shore Cooling 1. Carrier’s national average is higher, at 15 to 20 years 2. Gulf Shore points to Florida’s climate and near-constant use 1.

Which lifespan figures should you trust?

Use the Florida figures over national averages. We found no government study measuring AC life in Florida; these estimates come from contractors and manufacturers.

What shortens AC life near the coast?

Run time, salt air and dirty filters can shorten AC life 1:

  • Run time: Fort Myers logs 4,046 cooling degree days in a normal year 5. Each counts how far a day’s average temperature was above 65 degrees 6; higher totals mean more cooling.
  • Salt air: Carrier says salt water can travel up to two miles from the coast 7. It can corrode copper and aluminum coils, causing refrigerant leaks and system failure 7.
  • Dirty filters: ENERGY STAR says a dirty filter raises energy costs and can cause early failure 8.

When should you replace your AC?

Start pricing a replacement when your system is over 10 years old 9 and repairs get expensive. Check these signs and costs:

  • Warning signs: Carrier lists breakdowns, rising bills, uneven cooling and loud noises 2.
  • Age: ENERGY STAR says systems over 10 to 12 years old break down more often 10.
  • The 50% rule: Carrier says to upgrade when a repair nears 50% of a new system’s value 2.
  • The $5,000 rule: multiply the system’s age by the repair quote; above $5,000 favors replacement 11. A 12-year-old system with a $500 repair scores $6,000. Treat this as a rule of thumb: CBS News names no originator.

For systems using the older refrigerant R-22, only recycled, reclaimed or previously produced R-22 can be used for service after 2020 12. The EPA does not require you to replace an R-22 system 12.

Is there a new AC tax credit?

The federal 25C home improvement credit does not apply to a system installed in 2026. The IRS says it ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 13.

Your new system must also meet a minimum efficiency rating, called SEER2. AHRI lists the Southeast minimum as 14.3 SEER2 for split systems under 45,000 BTU 14. Ask each company for the rating in writing.

How do you make AC last longer?

Check the filter monthly and book a yearly check-up.

  • Monthly: inspect, clean or change the filter 8.
  • Yearly: book a pre-season check-up with a contractor 8.
  • Within two miles of the coast: ask about coastal equipment 7. Carrier’s coastal units have a five-year parts warranty for seacoast corrosion failure, but not cosmetic corrosion 7.

How do you check an AC contractor?

Look up the license before you sign. Florida DBPR lets anyone verify one by name, license number, city or license type 15.

  • CAC: Certified Air Conditioning Contractor 16, who can work anywhere in Florida 17.
  • RA: can work only where registered 17. It stands for Registered Air Conditioning Contractor 16.
